TRIT stands for “Turbine Rotor Inlet Temperature”. TRIT is the temperature of the air entering the 1st rotating stage of the gas producer turbine section of the gas turbine engine, after the fuel/air mixture has been combusted. TRIT is also sometimes called T3, where the number “3” defines its station (location) in the engine using a standard convention. This is important because when the TRIT is at its maximum allowed value, it is one component of how the maximum power of the engine is determined, the other being the total amount of airflow through the engine. Engine manufacturers call this the engine “rating”. The maximum allowed value of TRIT varies between different engine models and is a function of the engine design and construction, particularly the materials used in the 1st stage turbine nozzles and blades, and the amount and efficiency of cooling air used to minimize the metal temperature on the nozzle and blade air foils so that they do not melt. A higher TRIT will produce a higher output power for an equivalent amount of airflow. It is critical that the control system maintain the TRIT at or below the maximum allowable value so that the engine does not sustain damage from overheating of the gas producer turbine components.
