T5 is the temperature of the gas entering the 1st stage of the power turbine section, after the gas producer (or gas generator).  Gas producer is a term somewhat unique to Solar.  The number “5” defines the location in the engine, but a qualification is necessary.    All Solar engines are in a single spool gas producer configuration.  The gas producer section is on a single common shaft and all stages of the compressor and turbine rotate at the same speed.  In variable speed applications such as gas compressor or pump drives, the power turbine section is connected to the driven equipment and is on a separate shaft so it can rotate at a different speed than the gas producer.  This is sometimes referred to as a “two shaft” engine.  In constant speed applications such as generator drives, there is no separate power turbine and all turbine stages are connected to the common shaft.  These configurations have three stages of gas producer turbine and are sometimes referred to as “single shaft” engines.  In the single shaft engine, the T5 measurement is made at the inlet to the 3rd turbine stage.   T5 is the control parameter that is used to maintain TRIT at or below the maximum allowable.  It serves as a “proxy” for TRIT.  TRIT cannot be measured directly using conventional temperature devices such as RTDs or thermocouples because it is way too hot and the instruments would be damaged very quickly.  In the modern gas turbine engine, at maximum power, TRIT is above 1100°C, whereas T5 is typically in the range 600°-800°C.   Try the game below[grassblade id=52573]https://stacked-learning.com/staging1/wp-content/uploads/grassblade/52573-temperature-probe-game/index.htmlView more at Gas Turbine Principles Course: https://stacked-learning.com/staging1/courses/gas-turbine-principles
